Waste management has been neglected in the City of Cape Town.

Founder of Stop the CoCT, Sandra Dickson, says that this is evident in the state of informal settlements, where bins are not collected on time, or open areas have become dumping sites.

Dickson says that the public is being punished for not having nearby sites available for refuse.

She was speaking as Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced the unbundling of the water, sanitation, and waste management directorate.

This decision has been met with wide criticism, with the problem of inter-linked directorates working in silos.

Dickson says that there should be other solutions to the poor management of key infrastructure.
