Gender Islam: How Does It Respond To Abuse?

It has been over more than a year since the brutal and heartbreaking murders of Uyinene Mrwetyana and Jesse Hess, which sparked nation-wide outrage and started the necessary discussions around Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Femicide.

We discuss the importance and need for Muslims to raise their voices against the issues that often get swept under the rug.

A Stellenbosch University Professor Nuraan Davids points that there is a tendency in the Muslim community to shutdown and cover up issues such as aids and rape. She says people don’t realise when they do that it harms the very community they seek to protect.

Davids says some women would endure a lifetime of domestic violence to maintain their so-called family. Davids explains that Muslims often miss that they accountable for themselves and to Allah.
