Every year World Autism Day is observed on April 2nd. It aims to raise awareness and educate people about this developmental condition which impairs the ability to communicate and interact with others. Globally autism is thought to affect between one and two percent of people. In South Africa data is scarce about the extent of autism cases. But 2016 research published in the medical journal, the Lancet estimated that sub-Saharan Africa has seen a more than 70% increase in the number of children with developmental disabilities, including autism, since 1990.
