Will The Closure of Taxi Routes Curb Violence?

As of 26 July, the Paarl-Bellville taxi route will be closed for the next two months. Western Cape Transport MEC Daylin Mitchell says due to warring taxi associations Cata and Codeta failing yet again to reach a peaceful resolution, and end taxi violence, this was his last resort. While the closure of certain routes and taxi ranks has stirred up frustration among taxi bosses, Mitchell says commuter safety remains a top priority. How will the City of Cape Town ensure that taxi drivers are not being defiant?
