The Western Cape is celebrating the 81.4% matric pass mark with Education MEC David Maynier noting that it’s an outstanding achievement amid the challenges that confronted the 2022 class.

He says this class was at the greatest disadvantage due to the Covid pandemic and the disruptions that took place during the exams. But they showed incredible grit and gave it their all, making the province proud.

Maynier believes the support received by these learners also aided in them.

At least 26 000 learners attended winter school, and 23 000 attended spring school, during the holidays.

The province saw the highest exam turnout rate since 2015, meaning a greater proportion of learners who registered for the exams at the beginning of 2022 actually pitched up and wrote it.

All provinces showed an improvement in their matric pass rates. The 2022 matric class scored an 80.1% pass mark. The second highest since 2019 and improvement of 3.7%.
