After being out of commission for nearly a year, Unit 1 of the Koeberg nuclear power
station has come back online. Last night, Eskom confirmed that the unit had been successfully synchronized to the electricity grid.
Three system generators at Unit 1 needed to be replaced as part of the power utility’s application for a license to operate the power plant for another 20 years. Koeberg was designed to be operated for only 40 years. Its license from the Nuclear Regulator is set to expire in July 2024.
