Syria has lost a key figure in its government. Foreign minister Walid al-Moallem died this week, aged 79. He also served as the minister for Expatriates and was the Deputy Prime Minister. Al-Moallem continued to fulfill his duties until his passing, having served his country for over 50 years in various posts and under at least four leaders.
