Broadcasters, media executives, regulators and technology experts from across Africa gathered in Johannesburg on 1 and 2 July for the 2026 Radio Broadcasting Convention, where discussions focussed on the future of radio in an increasingly digital and AI-driven media landscape. The convention, convened by Broadcast Media Africa in collaboration with the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA), is themed “Intelligent Radio and Audio for the Next Generation of Listeners.”
The two-day programme will explore the evolving role of radio through sessions on artificial intelligence, audience measurement, podcasting, digital transformation, revenue generation, regulation and community broadcasting. Industry leaders examined how stations can remain relevant in a multi-platform environment while embracing emerging technologies and new business models.
Speakers and panellists include representatives from SABC Radio, ICASA, the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), Spotify, East Coast Radio, Kaya FM and several broadcasters from across Southern and East Africa.
Among the participants is Radio 786 Station Manager Tashreeq Truebody, who served as a panellist during a discussion on hybrid revenue models for African radio. The session examined innovative approaches to diversifying income streams and strengthening the financial sustainability of radio stations in a rapidly changing media environment.
