Police probe fatal shooting of Somali shopkeeper in Bonteheuwel amid extortion claims

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old Somali spaza shop owner in Bonteheuwel, while community leaders have raised concerns about the criminal justice system following the arrest of a suspect linked to the incident.

According to Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie, the man allegedly responsible for the killing had previously been linked to two other shootings in the area last week. McKenzie claims the suspect was arrested in connection with those incidents but was later released due to insufficient evidence. He further alleges that the suspect was out on parole for a murder conviction, a situation he says has deepened frustration among residents.

The victim, affectionately known as Umar, was shot and killed on Monday night while serving customers at his spaza shop on Assegaai Avenue.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain F.C. van Wyk said the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest after unidentified suspects entered the area and opened fire.

“The victim was serving customers when several shots were fired at him by unidentified suspects,” Van Wyk said.

He added that the motive for the attack is still under investigation and no arrests had been confirmed by police at the time of reporting.

McKenzie said there is currently no evidence to suggest the killing was motivated by xenophobia. Instead, he believes the incident points to an organised extortion racket targeting businesses operating in the community.

He extended his condolences to Umar’s family, friends and customers, describing him as a respected member of the Bonteheuwel community.

“Umar touched the lives of many through his kindness and service to the community. No family should ever have to endure such a senseless and violent loss,” McKenzie said.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
