Seven people have been killed and five others wounded in two separate mass shootings in Cape Town.
According to police, the attacks, which were reported within approximately 20 minutes of each other on Wednesday night, took place in Mitchells Plain and Philippi East.
In the first incident, armed suspects attacked five men who were reportedly standing outside a local tuck shop on the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig. Three of them sustained fatal gunshot wounds, while two others were injured.
A short while later, at a residence in Marcus Garvey, seven people were found shot. At least four of them died, and three others were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
The majority of those shot in these two incidents are young people.
Police say the circumstances surrounding these attacks are being investigated and detectives are pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The motive for the shootings is still unknown at this stage.
In an effort to prevent further violence and to enhance public safety, police say deployments have been heightened in the affected areas. They add that officers will maintain a visible presence.
