‘Poor Targeted by Police, CoCT’

The violence targeting the public this afternoon is an indication of the kind of anti-poor policies employed by the City of Cape Town.

Ndifuna Ukhwazi’s Buhle Booi was speaking after two people were arrested and an elderly person rushed to hospital, after law enforcement targeted the peaceful protest.

Stun grenades were used on the demonstrators.

The protest formed part of a joint call from several civil society organisations who have decried the latest decision by City Council to enforce by-laws that are targeting the poor and homeless.

Booi says that these by-laws show that the DA-led local government is racist in its policies. He says that the actions of the police reinforce this problem.
