South African football is in mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
The South African Football Players Union confirmed on Saturday that Adams passed away at a home in Schotschekloof, Cape Town. Police have opened an investigation, and the cause of death has not yet been released.
Just weeks ago, Adams represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing in all three group-stage matches. He helped Bafana Bafana reach the Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s history.
Adams’ story inspired many. Born on 5 May 2001, he progressed through the Stellenbosch FC academy and made history as the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. He made his senior debut in 2020 and quickly earned a reputation for his energy, composure and intelligence in midfield.
In January 2025, Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he became an important part of the squad. He played a key role in the team’s successful CAF Champions League campaign last season. Known for his calm presence on and off the field, Adams left a lasting impression on teammates, coaches and supporters alike.
On the international stage, Adams earned 13 caps for Bafana Bafana after making his debut in 2022. Just weeks ago, he fulfilled every footballer’s dream by representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He featured in all three group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana made history by advancing to the Round of 32. He also started in the match against Czechia just hours after the passing of his grandmother, a moment that highlighted the resilience and determination for which he was widely admired.
Tributes have poured in from across South Africa and around the world. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said it was “with profound shock and a heavy heart” that he learned of Adams’ passing, adding that “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents.”
Mamelodi Sundowns described Adams as “a highly talented Bafana Bafana midfielder” and extended its condolences to his family, friends, teammates and loved ones.
