Pensioner Dies In Newlands Flat Fire

A pensioner has died after a fire broke out at Cresswell Flats in Newlands. The 86-year-old man had sustained serious burn injuries.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut says that the man also sustained serious internal injuries and suffered from smoke inhalation. Traut says that there was minimal damage to the old age home.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse says that when they arrived the kitchen of the ground floor flat was alight.

The victim was declared dead on the scene. Carelse says that another man sustained second-degree burn wounds and was treated and transported to a nearby hospital.
