The driver of a white Nissan Sentra seen being pursued by the City of Cape Town’s Ghost Squad during an illegal street racing operation now faces criminal charges, after the vehicle was allegedly removed from the scene by members of the crowd.
The incident happened in Paarden Eiland late on Friday night and continued into the early hours of Saturday morning, as City Traffic Services officers carried out an operation targeting illegal street racing.
According to the City, officers initially arrested two motorists shortly after 11pm for reckless and negligent driving and participating in an illegal street race. By midnight, racing had resumed in the area.
City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the public should recognise the role of Traffic Services in enforcing traffic and by-laws. “Traffic and bylaw enforcement is our core business,” Smith said, adding that the City was doing its job when officers responded to the illegal gathering.
