Residents of the Atlas Mountain region in Morocco’s Marrakech still fear returning to their homes.

Aftershocks of 3.4 on the Richter scale were recorded this morning.

The weekend’s devastating earthquake has claimed more than 2 000 lives, with about 2 500 others injured.

Al Jazeera reports that security forces had brought a bus to collect people living and sleeping outside.

They were taken to a stadium where tents and other shelters had been set up.

But many families do not want to leave their homes.

This as the Moroccan authorities have promised compensation for their loss.

The death toll is expected to climb as most of the destruction occurred in the hard-to-reach mountainous area.

A seismological expert has warned that the aftershocks of the quake will probably continue to affect the North African country for the next few months.

This devastating quake comes as the devastation in Turkey and Syria is still being felt.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the countries’ border region, with at least 15.73 million people in Turkey and Syria having been impacted by the disaster.

The death toll from the February 6 disaster stands at over 55 000, with nearly 130 000 injured.

Millions have been displaced from their homes.
