Over the last decade, Eskom has awarded ‘dodgy red-flagged tenders to the tune of R178.16 billion. The dodgy contracts include ones issued to multinational conglomerates tainted by corruption or misconduct. Many of these contracts are also linked to the construction of the Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanga. At the Kusile power station alone, corruption, theft, and fraud, along with poor management and planning pushed construction costs to a whopping R161 billion. The initial estimated cost was only R78 billion. How much further could corruption have seemed into the power utility?
