Another District Six claimant has died without justice. Shariefa Khan, one of the oldest claimants passed away at the age of 100.

It’s understood that in April 2021 she signed papers to receive her apartment in the historic neighbourhood. But she didn’t receive permission to move in as government is still in the process of resolving defects in the building.

Khan who was known as “Aunty Riefa” had lived in Bailey Flats in Hanover Street until Apartheid’s 1968 forced removals. Shariefa and her husband Dawood Khan had owned the famous Bombay Café, also known as Dout’s Café.

Last year Shariefa had expressed her longing to return to District Six saying she wants to die there.
