A senior police officer has been granted bail in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court as he faces charges of sexual assault.
Colonel Makhosandile Makara of the Western Cape Protection and Security Services is accused of sexually assaulting and raping a female subordinate in May 2025. Bail was set at R5,000 with strict conditions.
The court ordered that Makara must not contact or communicate with the complainant.
Colonel Makara’s case has been remanded to May 27 for further consultation.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has recorded 116 rape cases by March 2026.
The Eastern Cape recorded the highest number with 22 cases. Gauteng and the Western Cape followed closely with 21 cases each.
Sixty five cases have already been concluded and referred for prosecution, with sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
