Abortion: Ethics and responsibilities in Islam

The US is in uproar after the Supreme Court overturned abortion legislation; making it illegal in all forms.

While protecting the sanctity of life is one of the chief tenets of Islam, the outrage in the US has brought up questions about bodily autonomy, and whether pregnant women will be forced to carry their children to term despite a threat to their own lives. So where does Islam stand on this matter?
