As the legality of the City of Cape Town’s impounding of taxis is being questioned – some political parties are demanding the suspension or resignation of Mayoral committee member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith.

The EFF Cape Metro who wants Smith gone believes he has failed to deal diplomatically with the taxi industry and has instead declared war on the taxi council, Santaco.

However, the City maintains that it’s following national law but the Transport Minister Sidisiwe Chikunga disagrees stating otherwise. She has ordered the release of the impounded vehicles.
