Chaos erupted in the Cape Town City Council this morning, as some members disagreed over the continued taxi impoundments.
Radio 786 has reliably learned that all opposition councillors have been barred from the council meeting, which is still going ahead with only DA members.
The source has told Radio 786 that the EFF members had started a protest just as Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis began speaking.
A scuffle then ensued.
It’s unclear why all members of the opposition have also been barred from the sitting.
Soon after the initial agreement was reached between the taxi industry in the Metro and City officials, the Good Party in council had called for an urgent debate on the impact of the taxi strike, and a call for clarity on what the agreement entailed.
This was declined by the Council Speaker.
Engagements between the parties continue, on how to resolve the impasse, with Urban Mobility Councillor, Rob Quintas saying that further discussions are expected next week.
