Several informal settlements across KwaZulu-Natal have still not been assessed by authorities.

Member of the shackdwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, Busi Diko says that families are left in the open as there are no alternative accommodations available.

The death toll stands at 306 after several days of rains in the province.

Diko describes a state of desperation as the land on which these informal settlements had been built, has deteriorated.

Radio 786 has received accounts of people fleeing their homes with only their identity documents as the rains washed away their shacks.
