The Labour Court has dismissed an application to halt disciplinary proceedings against a Heathfield High School Principal by the provincial education department. Wesley Neumann will have to face the hearing and pay the costs of his Labour Court application.

The Western Cape Education Department has released its reasons for acting against Neumann, which is centered around his refusal to commence class for Grade 12 learners in June.

The Heathfield High principal contended that it was not safe for learners to return to the classroom while country was experiencing a peak in Covid-19 infections.

The Department had institute charges against Neumann, including failure to carry out a lawful instruction of the employer, committing misconduct by allegedly encouraging personnel to not report for duty and discouraging the attendance of learners via social media platforms, amongst others.
