Heideveld matriarchs are donning their gowns and protecting the public from gangsterism and crime. The so-called ‘Gown Gang’ was initiated by Heideveld resident, Vanessa Nelson. She witnessed how a teenage girl was attacked by a thug who dragged her to the ground and punched her in the face for her cellphone. Community members soon gathered outside Vanessa’s home, built a fire, and kept watch over the neighbourhood.
