R650 million on B-Grade medical devices

An investigation into covid-19 expenditure revealed that all nine provincial health departments collectively sourced personal protective equipment (PPEs) and related products from 550 companies.

Of these companies, only 28 percent were licensed by the South African Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) who oversees the country’s medical devices and other health care related products.

At least R650 million was spent on goods classified as Class B medical devices from 80 unlicensed suppliers These products include masks and digital thermometers.
