The Hawks believe that the value of the illicit drug laboratory that was uncovered this week on a farm in the North West exceeds R1 billion.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, forensic experts are still processing the crime scene in the small town of Swartruggens; however, approximately 481kg of methamphetamine has thus far been confiscated. It’s estimated the street value of the tik runs into the millions. It’s anticipated that the quantity may increase once the entire scene is processed.![]()

Preliminary investigations indicate that the lab, which was uncovered on Wednesday following an intelligence-driven operation, is the fourth drug laboratory in South Africa with alleged Mexican links.
The 11 suspects arrested in this major drug lab bust are set to appear in the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.
The three South Africans and the eight foreign nationals, including five Mexicans, face charges related to drug manufacturing, illegal possession of precious metals and hazardous materials, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.
The Hawks say the farm owners have not yet been located, but the owner’s son and other relatives were among those apprehended. The owners are wanted for questioning as the Hawks investigation continues.
