Criminal Syndicate Linked to Taxi Industry Behind Long-Distance Bus Operators

Seven accused linked to an alleged extortion syndicate, have been denied bail.

They are allegedly linked to a syndicate targeting long-distance bus operators between the Eastern and Western Cape. The accused face 156 charges, including racketeering, extortion, intimidation, kidnapping, money laundering, and offences under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Most of the accused are involved in the taxi industry, while one operates a funeral business. Prosecutors say the group formed part of a coordinated criminal enterprise uncovered during Project Tsitsikama.

The State alleges the syndicate demanded protection fees from bus companies, including Intercape, Eagle Liner, Greyhound, and other operators. According to the prosecution, bus operators were threatened with violence and attacks if they refused to pay.

The court heard that more than 150 incidents involving Intercape buses have been recorded since January 2021.

The matter has been postponed to July 20th for further financial investigations.
