The illegal firearms trade will be stunted if they destroyed locally.

This sentiment was supported by criminologist, Dr Simon Howell.

He was speaking as the Western Cape government is proposing that confiscated firearms be destroyed in the province, rather than being transported to Pretoria.

He says that the cost, and possibility of these firearms being intercepted by criminals will be reduced.

While the proposal first needs to be approved by the national police department, there may be some resistance, which may be due to political differences.
