Illegal sand mining remains a problem in parts of Cape Town, with perpetrators of this type of crime appearing not afraid to deploy heavy machinery.
The City’s Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyson, says they received a complaint on Thursday about the illegal mining taking place in the Khayelitsha area. Upon arrival, officers found digger loaders. The drivers apparently fled with the keys of the machinery.
The officers returned the next day and decided to impound the machinery which is suspected to have been hired.
Dyson says the machinery will remain in their possession until the investigation is finalised. He adds that efforts are being made to bring those responsible for the illegal sand mining to book.
