The Khayelitsha protest that erupted during the early hours of this morning is over water, electricity, and sanitation. According to the Khayelitsha Development Forum leaders and residents of newly occupied land want the City to install these services.

The demonstrators blocked key routes disrupting traffic. It included sections of the N2 highway and Baden Powell Drive. At least three Golden Arrow busses and a truck were also set alight in Makhaza. Police say public order policing and other law enforcement agencies will remain in the area until law and order are restored.

Meanwhile, Matric learners in Khayelitsha have been reassured that should they not be able to make it to their exam venue by 10am, they will be afforded another opportunity to write their exam this year. This, as protestors, are blocking roads on the N2 calling on the City of Cape Town to install basic services in newly established informal settlements in the area.

Matric learners are writing Math Paper 1 this morning. Education MEC Debbie Schafer has called on protestors to stop because it is placing unnecessary anxiety on matric learners.
