In a bid to make Bonteheuwel safer this festive season, a group of community volunteers have taken up the task of patrolling the streets to assist commuters with the uptick in smash-and-grabs. Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie says following the consistent smash-and-grabs complaints and no police deployment to the area, Bonteheuwel volunteers will work in 12-hour shifts at Bluegum and Jakkelsvlei intersection.

McKenzie also criticised police saying that that the community has once again had to take on the role of SAPS in keeping their community safe.
