The stage is set for the Radio 786 Ultimate High School Challenge 2026, with 18 schools from across the Western Cape set to go head-to-head in a battle of knowledge, critical thinking and teamwork this Saturday, 15 August.
The competition brings together Grade 10 and 11 learners who will test their knowledge across a range of subjects and general knowledge, with R35,000 in prize money up for grabs. Learners will also have the opportunity to win a range of spot prizes, including computer tablets.
The participating schools represent a diverse cross-section of Cape Town’s education landscape, from long-established public schools to independent and faith-based institutions.
Among the schools taking part are some of Cape Town’s historic institutions, including Wynberg High School, which dates back to 1841, Rustenberg Girls’ High School, established in 1894, and Alexander Sinton High School, founded in Athlone in 1951.
The competition will also feature schools with strong academic and specialist programmes. Star College High School, for example, is recognised for its focus on Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Coding and Robotics, as well as its participation in academic Olympiads.
Meanwhile, schools such as Herschel Girls High School, Edgemead High School, South Peninsula High School and Spine Road High School will bring their own strong academic traditions and competitive spirit to the challenge.
The line-up also includes several Islamic and independent schools, including Islamia College, Al Azhar High School, The Oracle Academy and Focus College, with Focus College represented by campuses in South Africa’s Western Cape, including Mamre and Wynberg.
Other participating schools include Christel House South Africa High School, Peak View Secondary School and Milnerton High School.
For Radio 786, the Ultimate High School Challenge is more than a quiz. It provides a platform for young people to demonstrate their knowledge, work together under pressure and develop confidence in a competitive environment.
With 18 schools, R35,000 in prize money and additional spot prizes on offer, Saturday’s challenge promises to be a closely contested academic showdown and an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and potential of young learners across the Western Cape.
