The Western Cape High Court has heard the deliberate failures and oversight of the Apartheid physicians that examined Imam Abdullah Haron while he was being interrogated in 1969.
Pathologist, Dr Steve Naidoo, says that he can’t conceive how the apartheid doctor had claimed that the Imam’s bruises had not been serious.
His testimony comes as the Haron family’s advocate, Howard Varney says there is evidence that the Imam was interrogated almost daily up until the time of his death.
He told the inquest that this was confirmed by Apartheid security branch member, Johannes van Wyk at the time.
van Wyk has been identified as one of the men that brutally beat Imam Haron while he was held by the Apartheid regime.
Meanwhile, the son of slain anti-apartheid activist, Fort Calata, Lukhanyo, notes that these inquests are important as they overturn the decisions of a legal system that was geared towards supporting an oppressive regime.
Calata asserts that South Africa’s legal system is also given a chance to cleanse itself through these processes.
