70% of people unemployed – Qandu-Qandu informal settlement

Almost 70% of people living in the Qandu-Qandu informal settlement are unemployed. This as others are living off of between R1 and R 1000 per month.

These figures form part of a preliminary report conducted by the Social Justice Coalition. It
visited the informal settlement after the community complained that their ward councilor
and the City of Cape Town have not made flush toilets available to them. The call came
as 250 people share one chemical toilet in Qandu-Qandu. The settlement is built on a
flood prone area, and the recent rains left many people’s homes water-logged.
