Western Cape Disaster Management is on high alert for strong winds and heavy downpours as a cold front is expected make landfall on Sunday and continue until Wednesday.

It’s anticipated that the inclement weather will potentially result in flooding and damage of infrastructure in low lying areas.

According to Local Government, and Environmental Affairs MEC Anton Bredell rainfall of between 50 and 80mm is expected in the mountainous areas of the metropole, Cape Winelands and Overberg. Strong north-westerly winds, gusting up to 80km/h are also expected.

Bredell says the strong winds preceding the rains, together with dry veld conditions, will increase the risk of fires.

In Cape Town this week firefighters have been battling at least two wildfires. Both have been brought under control.
