Uptick in recorded fires over Easter

There has been an uptick in fire and rescue incidents as close to 300 cases were recorded over the Easter weekend in the City of Cape Town.

The City’s Mayco member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, says most incident categories declined, but trauma and medical incidents went from 21 to 36 which translates to a 71% increase.

Formal residential fires increased from just a dozen last Easter, to 30 this year.

The number of informal residential fires decreased slightly. Smith says these statistics are of concern, particularly as the country heads into winter where the fire risk in the home increases as the use of various heating methods increases.

Smith has appealed to residents to always keep fire safety top of mind.
