A total of 64 people have been displaced following a fire at the “Gatjie” informal settlement in Diep River.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Safety, JP Smith says that two people have died in the blaze.

Many people living in informal houses are at risk of facing a similar fate daily.

And as winter sets in, they’ll be turning to open flames for warmth.

This latest tragedy has once again highlighted the depths of poverty in the City of Cape Town, and the need for proper housing.
