Silverlea Primary School learners have bagged the top three spots in a literacy competition.

The Athlone based school won a total of R350 000 in prize money.

The Growsmart competition targets Grade 4 – 6 learners in various categories from Mathematics, Literacy, and Entrepreneurship. Some 300 teams participated in the competition.

Teacher and mentor Zeenat Larney says it’s a big achievement for the school but more so for the learners. She adds that they are proud of them as they dedicated their evenings, and came in on their “home” days.

The school’s principal, Sharon Coetzee says that the money will mostly be used to enhance technology at the school. They will also look into a literacy programme that learners can use at school and on their smart phones.
