The taxi council, Santaco Western Cape is heading to court over the impoundment of its vehicles as the minibus taxi strike enters its second week in Cape Town.

Santaco extended its stay away saying that this will be until the court process is completed.

It’s seeking an urgent interdict for the release of all vehicles impounded as well as to stop the City of Cape Town and Western Cape Mobility Department from impounding anymore taxis until matters are resolved at the negotiating table.

The taxi council had expressed concern about the threat of further impoundments after the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith had warned that they would impound 25 taxis for every truck, bus, vehicle or facility that is burnt or vandalised. Santaco’s Western Cape chairperson, Mandla Hermanus had said that they don’t want to send their operators into a lion’s den.

Premier Alan Winde has welcomed Santaco’s legal action saying it will provide clarity and clear up any differences of understanding on the legislation regarding impoundments.

He however expressed disappointment that the minibus taxi strike will continue. He says each day that it drags on is a major setback, especially for the poor who rely on public transport to move around. He adds that the strike’s impact has been devastating on the economy as well.

The Provincial MEC for Mobility, Ricardo Mackenzie has called for an urgent meeting with Santaco Western Cape to discuss the agenda of issues that must be addressed.
