Protest art under threat in Cape Town

The murals in support of Palestine are a form of protest art and should therefore not be confused with graffiti. This is the contention of the Women’s Legal Centre’s Sehaam Samaai, who assisted the Bo Kaap community when they were confronted by the City of Cape Town over the pro-Palestine murals being painted on their homes.

Now with law enforcement officers hastily painting over a Palestine flag in Lavender Hill, Capetonians are concerned that the City is showing its bias against people showing solidarity with Palestinians.

Samaai argues that it is very likely that there was no consultation with the Lavender Hill community before the mural was erased. She says that South Africans should be allowed to participate in what is probably one of the most peaceful means of protest, which is through art. Instead, it appears that the City is denying them this right.
