Muharram – A Time of Reflection and Renewal

Muharram marks the commencement of the  Islamic year.
 
Calculated according to the lunar calendar, 1 Muharram of the year 1443 falls on 10 August 2021.
 
Muharram is considered the second holiest month after the month of fasting, Ramadan.
 
The new year calls for a time of prayer and reflection on the sacrifices that led to the beginning of the Islamic faith.
 
Professor Aslam Fataar, based at the Education Department at Stellenbosch University reflects on the significance and  lessons of Muharram.
