Mitchells Plain Residents Block Jakes Gerwel Drive Demanding Justice for Murdered Pastor Anthea Wilkinson

Concerned citizens are protesting on Jakes Gerwel Drive in response to the death of a Cape Town pastor who succumbed to her injuries after being a victim of a smash-and-grab. Protestors are demanding justice for the victim. On October 11th, Pastor Anthea Wilkinson was travelling with another woman near the R300 and Jakes Gerwel Drive intersection when the passenger-side window was smashed leaving Wilkinson bleeding and unconscious. She was rushed to hospital. Nearly two weeks later, no arrests have yet been made.

Meanwhile, speaking to Radio 786 at the protest, South African Human Rights Commissioner (SAHRC) Chris Nissan explained that he attended as an observer but criticised the manner in which the demonstration was being conducted. He noted that the anger protestors are feeling are warranted and that they do have the right to protest peacefully but not inconvenience fellow motorists. Nissan told Radio 786 that he was manhandled, assaulted and verbally abused.
