There has been a deadly train crash in India’s eastern state of Odisha.

More than 280 people have been killed and over a thousand others injured.

It’s reported that it was a multiple train collision. Indian Railways says the two services involved were the Coromandel Express and the Howrah Superfast Express.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he is distressed by the incident and his thoughts are with the bereaved families.

A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the collision.

The train crash is believed to be India’s worst since the 1990s.

India’s trains serve 13 million passengers every day, and 8 billion a year. While the government has recently invested millions to upgrade its railways, years of neglect have caused tracks to deteriorate.
