The anti-apartheid struggle has been sold out by the middle classes. Political commentator, Moeletsi Mbeki says that South Africans are languishing in poverty, yet the country’s mineral, agricultural, and intellectual wealth are leaving its shores. He told Radio 786 that this has largely been facilitated by a middle class that has only been focused on enriching itself. He notes that since the end of apartheid, the liberation movement leadership had positioned themselves into places of power, regardless of their skills. This criticism comes as South Africa’s parastatals are struggling to function, due to maladministration, and lack of vision. Mbeki says that the people that voted them into power have been left behind, for the sake of greed.
