Gangsterism and Social Dysfunction: A Collective Response

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) convened a seminar on gangsterism and social dysfunction. Hosted by the Jaap Durand Chair and the Research Chair in Gender, Transformation and Worldmaking, the event drew wide attention.

Civil society, faith communities, government, police, academia, and affected residents came together in dialogue. Discussions highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence on families and communities across the Western Cape.

Prof Hein Willemse stressed the urgent need for collaborative, sustainable solutions to this crisis. The programme examined justice, youth vulnerability, and state and policing strategies. Community leaders and policymakers shared lived experiences and practical insights. This book captures those voices, reflections, and strategies, offering a vital resource for change.
