Four arrests have been made in connection with three separate taxi-related attacks in Cape Town and Hermanus in the Western Cape. According to police, the provincial Taxi Violence Unit arrested a 29-year-old wanted suspect at Langa taxi rank while attending to a separate taxi-related murder.
The arrest is linked to the October 16 shooting at Epping taxi rank, in which two taxi owners were killed, and another was wounded. A total of three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Another 29-year-old suspect was traced and arrested in Kensington in connection with the alleged petrol bombing of the home of a taxi association chairperson in Retreat on September 30.
Meanwhile, in the Overberg, the team arrested two suspects in connection with a shooting at Zwelihle taxi rank. Two taxi owners were killed, and a taxi driver was injured. Police say six gunmen carried out the attack.
The suspects are expected to appear in their respective magistrates’ courts. Police say deployments have been reinforced at identified taxi violence hotspots, while detectives from the specialised unit continue to investigate all reported cases.
