Four reckless drivers have been arrested, and four vehicles impounded on the N1 highway in Cape Town. They were arrested during the early hours of Saturday morning while the City’s Highway Patrol was attending to a truck accident on the N1 outbound near the Koeberg Interchange.
According to the City’s Mayco Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, three vehicles were caught by CCTV operators racing from the CBD along FW de Klerk Boulevard. One of the vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz, subsequently crashed into a stationary traffic vehicle at the scene, causing significant damage.
The three drivers were arrested for alleged illegal street racing and reckless driving. The Mercedes-Benz driver also faces a charge of drunk driving. A few hours later, a suspected drunk motorist driving a BMW M40 drove through the road-closure cones at the truck scene.
The individual was also arrested. Smith has warned motorists that those who choose to race on Cape Town’s roads or drive drunk can expect enforcement action.
