CAPE TOWN – Five people have been arrested after the confiscation of a total of 16 000 mandrax tablets in Belgravia and Crawford. The Maitland Flying Squad made the R700 000 mandrax bust after following up on information about possible drug dealing at a fast-food establishment in the Belgravia area. In the parking area, they found and observed the occupants of three vehicles. One of the suspects was seen transferring a black bag to another vehicle.

Upon this, the officers approached and conducted a search. At least 3000 mandrax tablets were found in one vehicle and an undisclosed amount of cash was found in another. Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick C. van Wyk, says it’s believed the money is the proceeds of crime. Further information led the officers to a premises in Crawford.

There they found at least 13 000 mandrax tablets, and an undisclosed amount of schedule 1 medicine. The suspects, a 58-year-old woman and four men aged between 48 and 60, face charges of possession and dealing in drugs. The drugs and vehicles were handed in as exhibits at Athlone SAPS. The suspects’ cellphones were taken in for processing and for further investigation. Police say the suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon.
