Factionalism Affecting Police Service

The apparent purge of key police officials is another example of factional politics within the ANC.

This is the assessment of criminologist Professor Elrena van der Spuy. She says that key police officers like Major General Jeremy Vearey have links to the liberation movement.

But he, and many others like him have found themselves in opposition to, and a deep irritation for another power bloc with the South African Police Service.

Van der Spuy was speaking as police union Popcru prepares to appeal Vearey’s dismissal. He was fired for alleged misconduct relating to his social media posts.

He was found to have brought the police service into disrepute for comments he made about national police commissioner, Khehla Sitole.

Van der Spuy has meanwhile noted that the relationship between Sitole, and Police Minister Bheki Cele has also taken strain because of this factional politics.
