Eskom has pulled its services from Zwezwe in Khayelitsha after two of its employees were held at gunpoint and robbed of their belongings and their company vehicle.

Eskom’s Distribution Cape Coastal Cluster says the suspension of operations means that there will be a much greater delay in the restoration of electricity to customers affected by outages in the area.

The cluster says it will engage with local community leaders and police to find solutions to ensure the safety of their staff before services resume. It adds that the safety of their staff is non-negotiable and if any violence or harassment continues, they will prioritise other electricity supply areas where their safety is guaranteed.

Last week a security guard was killed, and another critically injured while City officials were inspecting janitorial services in Site B in Khayelitsha. They were shot at.
